Governor Tate Reeves has formally requested a Major Disaster Declaration for several Mississippi counties affected by severe winter storms that occurred from January 23 to January 27, 2026. The request seeks federal individual assistance and disaster unemployment benefits for residents, as well as public assistance for local governments, including support for debris removal.
“The state of Mississippi has been working closely with FEMA, state agencies, and local governments on this Major Disaster Declaration request,” Governor Reeves said. “Together, we’ve been assessing damage and working to ensure that my request met the required federal thresholds. My request is another step forward as we continue to help Mississippians recover from the historic winter weather storm. The state of Mississippi will continue to use every tool at its disposal to help those in need. We will not stop until the work is complete.”
The governor indicated that if more damages are identified and verified, additional counties may be added to the declaration request for either individual or public assistance.
