The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced updates on several infrastructure projects in southwest Mississippi. Charles Busby, Commissioner of the Southern Transportation District, said that significant progress was made during the summer construction season. “Whether it’s a minor resurfacing project or a large-scale bridge replacement, the work happening in southwest Mississippi reflects our commitment to improving traveling conditions for motorists and positioning our state for economic growth, all while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” said Busby.
In Pike County, a major resurfacing project is underway on I-55 from State Route 24 to U.S. 98. The project includes constructing two roundabouts at the I-55 interchange and raising four bridges over I-55. The $76 million contract was awarded to Barriere Construction and is expected to conclude in 2027.
Marion County sees progress on replacing both eastbound and westbound bridges over the Pearl River on U.S. 98. The $57.7 million project, awarded to T.L. Wallace, involves bank stabilization efforts and is slated for completion in 2027.
Simpson County’s State Route 149 bridge replacement continues with work on the Strong River bridge. The $25 million contract also went to T.L. Wallace, with Phase I ending in 2025 and Phase II by 2026.
In Franklin County, an aging truss bridge on U.S. 98 over the Homochitto River is being replaced with a modern concrete bridge. Key, LLC received the $25.7 million contract for this project set to finish in 2026.
Safety improvements are ongoing along U.S. 49 in Simpson County as part of an $11 million effort by T.L. Wallace to enhance traffic safety measures.
An overlay project on I-55 between Pike and Lincoln counties is nearing completion this fall under a $7.3 million contract with Dickerson and Bowen, Inc.
Covington County recently completed two mill and overlay projects on U.S. 49 totaling approximately ten miles, awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders and APAC.
A new intersection with traffic signals at State Route 28 and State Route 37 in Smith County should be complete this fall under Chris Albritton Construction’s $5.5 million contract.
In Lawrence County, Walters Construction finished constructing a roundabout on State Route 27 as part of a $5.3 million project.
Pike County’s U.S. 98 mill and overlay work is nearly done except for final inspections by Dickerson & Bowen under a $5.3 million contract.
Jefferson Davis County saw completion of a bridge replacement on State Route 184 over White Sand Creek by N.L Carson Construction for $4.5 million.
Marion County’s overlay of State Route 43 has concluded with Southern Paving handling the $4.1 million task.
Magnolia Utility Services is removing dead trees along state routes in Lawrence, Lincoln, and Pike counties as part of a $3.9 million initiative expected to finish this winter.
Simpson County’s seal and overlay project on State Route 28 will wrap up this fall under APAC’s management at a cost of $3.2 million.
Finally, Covington County’s intersection improvements at U.S. 49 and State Route 35 began recently with Walters Construction overseeing the $2.1 million effort due by spring 2026.
