The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC) is set to open the application period for its Wild Hog Control Program (WHCP) starting November 1, 2025. The program aims to assist landowners and managers in controlling wild hog populations on private agricultural and forestry lands across Mississippi.
Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson announced that applications will be accepted until November 15. The WHCP provides “smart” traps to eligible participants, along with necessary training and technical guidance for effective trapping methods.
Applications are evaluated based on several criteria, including the number of acres available for trapping, historical agricultural losses due to wild hogs, and current trapping efforts. For smaller properties, cooperative applications are encouraged. MDAC recommends one trap per 500 acres, adjusted according to landscape and land use.
Traps are provided for one-month intervals, depending on their use and success rate. Interested parties can apply online at www.mdac.ms.gov/whcp, where they can also find program guidelines and additional information. Questions about the program can be directed to Harold Leonard at HaroldL@mdac.ms.gov.
