Small business owners in Mississippi are encouraging the state Senate to approve S.2272, a bill that would exempt certain agricultural and logging supplies from sales tax. Leah Long, State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), said that rising costs for fuel, equipment, and supplies are affecting those working in agriculture and forestry.
“Small business owners who work in agriculture and forestry are dealing with higher costs for fuel, equipment and supplies,” Long said. “Senate Bill 2272 would help relieve the financial pressure on these businesses by removing sales taxes on the tools and materials they need to operate.”
If passed, S.2272 would remove state sales tax from various items used by commercial farmers and professional loggers. The bill proposes ending taxes on agricultural and logging equipment that was previously taxed at a reduced rate. It also seeks to fully exempt livestock fencing materials and agricultural lime when bought for agricultural purposes. Additionally, the legislation instructs the Department of Revenue to establish a permit system so eligible farmers can receive exemptions at the point of purchase.
Leah Long noted that this measure could offer significant relief to small businesses in rural communities where farming and logging play key roles in local economies.
“These businesses aren’t asking for special treatment,” she said. “They’re asking for common-sense tax relief on essential supplies so they can stay competitive, protect jobs and support Mississippi’s economy.”
