Amazon received $24 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Mississippi communities for three projects.

Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Mississippi provided the 26th-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.

Mississippi is ranked behind Georgia (5 projects/$27 million) and ahead of Iowa (2 projects/$22 million), Kansas (2 projects/$22 million), and Colorado (9 projects/$16 million).

The most expensive subsidy provided in Mississippi was by the Marshall government, which offered $12 million to Amazon in a grant against construction costs, road improvements and tax abatements.

The second largest subsidy was worth $9 million in state grants for a project in Madison.

There were no developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.

Mississippi is known for spending billions of dollars over the years to encourage automaker companies, such as Nissan, Toyota, and Continental Tire, to invest and expand in the state.

The state makes annual reports on the majority of its subsidies, but there is no information about tax-based and local subsidies.

As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
