Officials gathered to celebrate the completion of a sidewalk project at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) in Scooba. The ceremony marked the opening of a multi-use path that encircles the campus, featuring lighting upgrades and drainage improvements. The initiative aims to enhance safety, connectivity, and accessibility for students and faculty.
Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons attended the event alongside EMCC President Dr. Scott Alsobrooks and Kemper County Board of Supervisors President Scott Johnson. “As Commissioner, what is so exciting about this project is that it adds beauty, connectivity and safety when you look at the drainage improvement that has been made on the campus,” said Commissioner Simmons. “This sidewalk connects all facilities. The student body can use this sidewalk to get to every facility on campus. That is fantastic.”
The $2.3 million project received federal funding with a local contribution of approximately $500,000 and was awarded to Simmons Erosion Control, Inc., based in Lake, Mississippi. The Mississippi Department of Transportation’s Local Public Agencies Division supervised the planning, design, and construction phases under the Federal Highway Administration’s guidelines.
