U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), chair of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus, expressed support for President Trump’s decision to rescind a rule from the Biden administration that allowed Veterans Affairs hospitals to provide elective abortion services.
“I am incredibly grateful to President Trump and Veterans Affairs Secretary Collins for rescinding one of the Biden administration’s most aggressive pro-abortion actions, promoting and performing elective abortions in Veterans Affairs facilities. The Biden administration was so committed to its radical abortion agenda that it blatantly violated federal and state laws to turn VA clinics into abortion providers. Not only should U.S. tax dollars never be used to support the abortion industry, but our veterans deserve better and honest health care. Thank you, Mr. President, for putting our veterans first again,” Hyde-Smith said in a statement.
The Federal Register is expected to publish a proposed rule that would return policy on abortion services at VA facilities to what it was before the Biden administration, which excluded such services. The publication will begin a public comment period before any final decision is made.
Hyde-Smith was among those in the Senate who sponsored a Congressional Review Act resolution seeking to overturn the Biden-era VA abortion rule, arguing that it violated the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding for elective abortions. In January, President Trump signed an executive order reinstating enforcement of the Hyde Amendment.
